Fluorescent green polyketal particles stay in rats’ hearts three days after injection. The polyketals encase an antioxidant enzyme made by the body and are taken up by cells within the heart. There the particles slowly release the enzyme, which soaks up toxic free radicals produced when cells are deprived of blood during a heart attack.

EMORY (US)—Scientists have found a way of getting a naturally occurring antioxidant directly into the hearts of rats, with the hope that someday this discovery could improve the health of human heart-attack sufferers. Continue…
