My soon-to-be 60 year old son had a massive stroke Oct 2011. He still has no use of his left (predominant) hand and is currently using an electric devise on his left leg to help his toes lift as they move forward. He was at Rush in Chicago and then with RIC where he was given aggressive therapy and encouragement, moving from the wheelchair, to a walker, to sturdy cane and now a lighter cane for mostly balance. as he continues to improve his gait, endurance and independence.

We still have quite a ways to go -- he is hoping to receive botox injections in his left arm next month to relax the tightening in his elbow and perhaps encourage his hand and fingers to become active.

Was thrilled to learn about the continuing research being undertaken. Thank you every one who is involved. with sincere gratitude

This is so hopeful. If I ever have a stroke I hope my doctors know about the intense training. I'm going to ask mine to write it on my chart.

This is great if the staff at hospitals DO INTENSE RETRAINING with stroke patients. Right now they get drugs and some PT and then hospitals get them out to another facility for rehab. In most cases the elderly are sent to nursing homes and we all know they aren't getting the rehab and proper care. The excuse always is ins. time and/or short staffed) in about 60% of homes. The care of patients needs to be greatly improved both at the hospital and rehab especially a nursing home.
