Nele Taevere - ever consider calling child services? I understand that they listen to family more often than they listen to strangers. That child would probably have found other things to lead him down the path he is on if it weren't for the games. It's almost good that this is being caught now... if only someone would act before he DOES act out one of his threats. Clearly the parents don't care (if what you're saying is true and a complete picture).

To say that violent anything (even video games) doesn't influence us would be stupid. My 10 year old recently began playing WoW with us. But that's just it, he must play with me, my husband, one of our known friends or any combo on the list I just mentioned. When I find him not following the rules we set forth I, very literally, pull the computer power plug out of the computer. If he does something way outside the rules, the power cord is taken away. He can't play and get himself in trouble w/o that cord.
I'm not stupid; I've been gaming online for longer than he's been alive. I know that there are predators out there. I was preyed upon back when I was 13 and used ICQ. My mother was wise enough to step in when she discovered what was happening. But that's just the point; my mother was there and discovered what I had, unknowingly, gotten myself into. As parents, if we can't promise to be there to protect our children from harming themselves (even when it’s an accident) then we shouldn't let them play. Period.
My hope in letting our son play with us, is that he will learn how to play and how to interact appropriately now so that when he is older he knows how to behave and interact and can make good decisions on his own. I wish to one day let him off to play on his own, but that day will be a long way away. Much like learning to ride a bike, he started with us with training wheels, then the wheels came off, and after a few months he could ride his bike in our culdesac w/o us outside with him. Same with the game. Teach them, let go but stay close to monitor, then let them go within boundaries and check up on them!
I stress again, parents need to be involved. To test how our son was reacting to the video game, I let him prompt me for lunch. I took a break to grab a sandwich and he said he wasn't hungry. I later learned he also did not have breakfast (the husband was up with him, was my day to sleep in). So he had nothing to eat until 6pm when I made dinner. I made a big deal out of this to show him how silly it was and he agreed. Not eating for a video game was pretty stupid. This just reinforces my point, parents need to be involved or the kids will not learn what is right and wrong! This goes for everything, games, TV, books, peer to peer behavior, sports, you name it! They are called dependants for a reason, because they depend on us! Be there for them or don't breed.

It seems like this debate is literally older than video games themselves. For ages, overprotective parents and media pundits have babbled about the completely unproven theory that violent games make kids violent, asserting that there is a definitive one-way path of cause and effect. Yet there is not. Just imagine how violent humans were... all throughout history save the past 100 years. Looking at it this way, even DEADSPACE looks like spring in a meadow. I work in game design, these are my guns, and I'm sticking to them. -http://www.gameshastra.com

@ Shwn Daley. It doesn't matter how much a parent explains, for some children the behavior goes beyond that. I know for my son it is almost as though he has no conrol over his anger when he plays. He knows that it will be taken away if he yells, screams, and shows over the top behavior, but yet he continues. He is not allowed to play until I feel that he has the ability to control his emotions. I know grown men that break their controlers and have terrible behavior when playing their own video games. Everyone is not the same. I guess some can handle it and some can't. I believe it can be compared to being frustrated at your computer, only magnified 100x's.

my sister-in-law's 6 year old son plays bloody violent videogames that are rated 16...
The boy has issues at school, almost every week a teacher or parent complains about him hurting other kids. he has hurted my daughter intentionally. they have no rules, he never gets punished for anything,
his mother justifies everything he does by saying "he's just different"....
a while ago I was babysitting him and he announced that he wants to be a killer and he has his dad's guns and he can use them.... I explained to him, that guns are very dangerous and you should never touch it without adult presents and tried to make him understand that killing is not fun...
I talked to my sister-in-law about that and she got mad at me, saying I was a bigger issue out if it than it was...
He has played video-games, computer games, playstation, wii, you name it, since he was like 3 and that's all he ever does. Neither parents have time for him, he doesn't do sports. they let him ride a bike two streets away on his own and play in neighbours yards and do not say anything.
I am very scared and worried for him, I feel sorry for him. his parents are normal, working people, not addicted to anything, just lazy and don't care, dad watches tv all night and sleeps, and mom is too busy with her own life...

I think that the parents really need to sit kids down and go over the difference between fantasy and reality. I remember growing up playing games like 007. Resident Evil, and others, and the early GTA. All of which required me to use a gun to succeed. I knew though, when I turned off that console, I was back in the real world. Kids don't get that concept today because the parents don't care in my opinion.
