There is a reason Samurai and other martial artists meditated so much. In combat, whether one-on-one or on a battle field, staying calm is a vitally important part of staying alive. Panicking does not help anyone (except the enemy).

This article fails to report any of the study's actual findings. All that is said is "Our findings suggest that, just as daily physical exercise leads to physical fitness, engaging in mindfulness exercises on a regular basis may improve mind-fitness.”

How did the researchers arrive at this statement? What assumptions are they making? These are some basic questions that should be covered in any form of science reporting. Depriving a reader of such information reduces science to a form of mysticism.

Richard Strozzi-Heckler in his book "In Search of the Warrior Spirit: Teaching Awareness Disciplines to the Military" goes in to detail the effect meditation on high performance military personal. It is available online at google books -http://tinyurl.com/2cno3o8.
