in my travels through the north kimberley i have seen many of the gwion gwion art sites and have been at a loss to explain them. the earliest examples are the finest work and show great detail but no weapons.
the later examples have spears ,fighting and are much cruder. is fascinating and i wonder if the very earliest art sites are hidden under the sea by the rise in water levels at the end of the last ice age. these art sites are a national treasure and should be protected at ALL cost. they are our version of the mona lisa and deserve international recognition. to see the fantastic finesse and imagery of these figures and to wonder at the thoughts and lifestyle of the people who painted these masterpieces is a life defining moment.
as for the drought that ended this civilisation, did it also end the megafauna and is it linked to the change in flora across the kimberley as discovered in pollen samples from Carpenters Gap.
Why is our earliest history not more widely known and promoted as the greatest tourist attraction in the country, both as a purely artistic phenomenon and as a human interest one.
who were these people, where did they come from and what happened to them.
it is the greatest mystery and sadly mostly unknown
