What about "catching" hope or optimism? Do people become "infected" with them through the same measures as loneliness? What factors make one more susceptible to catching loneliness (other than gender)?

As for:
“Society may benefit by aggressively targeting the people in the periphery to help repair their social networks and to create a protective barrier against loneliness that can keep the whole network from unraveling.”

This sentence seems to be juggling two different things, "social networks" and lonely individuals. If lonely people are shown productive ways to overcome loneliness (social integration through whatever social activities one feels are meaningful) they will through this instruction be brought back into the collective fold.

And what exactly is this loneliness all about? affectlessness? depression? an accumulation of everyday stress? wouldn't people who were lonely for different reasons be more or less responsive to efforts "to repair their social networks"?

and what is the cure for early onset loneliness? exercise? social activities? soma?
