The real cause (s) behind the recent financial turmoil is

1. Fractional reserve banking
2. Borrowing and lending as a business
3. Limited liability concept
4. Debt

I am a big fan of the energy policy studies of Amy Meyers-Jaffe-- (et al) and obviously they have framed this issue in a way that is based on solid exploration of assumptions. We cannot underestimate the complexities of oil markets as one of the world's primary resource currencies. But as Jaffe has stated - the problem with oil is is lack of substitutability. (We cannot put electrons inside a gas tank). The systems level problem is the combustion engine (not oil). And if we can focus our efforts on accelerating the transition towards electric motors and put oil into a new framework of one of many fuels used in transportation-- it diminishes its power to corrupt. This won't happen over night and oil is not going to disappear (if we include non-conventionals) -- but to address substitutability issues of portable fuels is our lever. The incentive for automakers is changing their manufacturing paradigm (reducing mfg footprint, not carbon footprint). So we can analyze the implications of oil until we are blue in the face-- but until we change its main partner (the combustion engine) nothing will change.
Just some thoughts to consider
