Hydroponics is much more expensive than standard farming though. I'd imagine it would be much cheaper to develop a herbicide than it would to place all crop plants in hydroponic facilities. Then again there are lots of other benefits to hydroponics - less space required, higher yield, quicker growth, controlled system - I'm definitely a fan.
