I am a Kings science graduate (BSc Geology, 1976 after hospitalisation 1975/6 for Bipolar disorder). I would not disagree with the analysis. Hypermania undoubtedly does give the ability in some people to concentate for long periods and to cover a lot of work more in realtively short time spans. However there is none the less a heavy price to be paid for these "advantages" for the majority of people with the disorder.

For future geberations it would be good to see tools for the early diagnosis of the disorder . These would currently seem to cover genetics, childhood trauma and other risk factors. Then it may be possible to make earlier diagnosis and interventions such a s Lithium and antipsychotic medication , CBT and so on to avert much of the possible chaos and disruption to lives caused by diagnosis only after bouts of psychosis with the attendant damage to relationships, self esteem and career prospects.
