It is estimated that about 35% 0f our aging is due to our sex and genetics. The remainder due to telomeres (but not certain as to how) and the formation of free radicals that harm our cells, mainly the mitochondria. These same "experts "on aging state that if the free radicals were controlled and we were able to understand how to increase the telomeres we might live to over 500 years.
In some experiments it was shown that mice had significant increase in life span without increase in the number of telomeres but did have an increase in the telomerase enzyme itself. Cancer cells are also able to increase their telomerase levels and allow new telomeres to be produced that makes them "immortal".Bacteria get around the telomere problem by having circular chromosomes. (pardon the pun).
Meditation, yoga and reduced stress all have an effect on telomeres and therefore aging. Increased fatty acids are associated with diabetes II and damage to our mitochondria which is also associated with premature aging.
Its a very complicated process.
