Is the extra mass in the earth's core thought to be because of the smaller physical size of the carbon atoms allows them to fit in between the larger heavier atoms of metal around them without taking up any more physical space? Would not hydrogen atoms, being even smaller, be able to fill in even more places? Just a thought. If I remember properly what I've heard, even the densest materials are mostly empty space between atoms even in their solid forms.
Is there a possibility that there is a dark matter component to the additional mass computed. I don't know enough about the so called dark matter to know how it behaves.

Being a highly educated academic, I thought Glenn's comment to be quite witty.

Glenn, your weak attempt at humor, is, in a word, weak. And if you think this is a suitable forum for anti-intellectual wisecracks, well, try to think harder next time.

Could this be a reason why some highly educated academics are so dense?
